1 thought on “The H.M.S. Bad Idea

    1. Stumbled across this book at the Cleveland Comicon, where the author had a fun booth. Just paging through it I cracked up several times, so of course I had to buy a copy.Once I got home & read the entire thing, I was even more impressed, & happy that I had gone with my instincts. The book is loaded with wit & silliness & wisdom & wordplay. It simultaneously celebrates & mocks geek culture in all the right ways, lots of obscure references & in-jokes, lots of "where the [...]

    2. I've enjoyed the Rock, Paper, Cynic comic for years and it's great to have (some of) it in book form. The idea of having the comic's fans not only help fund the book, but also contribute to it, was brilliant and quite possibly unique. The comics and the bad ideas are a blend of geeky, silly and weirdly profound, and the fact that my kids find them as funny as I do gives me great hope for their future. My only regret about this book was that it should have been twice as large. Maybe the next one? [...]

    3. Love how the ideas for the comics came as both crowd-sourced and crowd-funded on Kickstarter. This is the perfect coffee table book to keep on hand because you can open it to any page for a laugh. The level of talent required to draw so many comics over the years, then take so many new ideas and run with it is beyond what I expected. There are lots of guest artists you'll likely recognize, though honestly Peter's are my favourites. When I first got my copy, it was small enough to carry around in [...]

    4. As expected, Peter's comics are strong. My original concerns was that when there are this many additional contributors, the overall quality can sometimes suffer. Fortunately, this is not the case. Nearly all the submissions are gems, and even the so-called weaker ones are definitely worth a chuckle. This is a brilliant concept, and the execution is just as strong. Everyone involved should be proud of themselves.

    5. Peter is a creative talented individual, and an even more uncanny ability to bring talented individuals together to create what can only be described as the book that you should bring with you everywhere for those moments where life may be dull. Though light hearted in nature- each bad idea has an underlying tone that can leave an impact, and make you have deep thoughts that you didn't know even existed.

    6. one of the best finds ever, i can't believe how much heart and good humor has gone into this book. every page is a treat and the humor is laugh out loud worthy. i would recommend this to anyone, but fans of webcomics and webcomic humor will find this book to be of particular interest based on how many big names have gone into it.

    7. This damn thing is a TOUR DE FORCE! You'll seldom if ever see so many hilarious ideas (obviously, all of them bad) packed into one volume. The quality of Peter's collaborators alone tell you this is going to be a hell of a fun ride, and the result is astonishing and often insightful. NO ONE should be without this book. One star. Just kidding. ALL the stars!

    8. So many brilliant bad ideas! The book's humour is biting, witty and unexpectedly delightful. I've never read anything quite like it. It's a unique combination of guest artist contributions and crowd-sourced "bad ideas" bound together by Peter's expert storytelling and hilarious comics. And, it makes a great conversation starter!

    9. Seriously, if you need a good laugh don't look any further than this book. Peter's humour is spot-on and there isn't one page that won't have you giggling out loud. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone!!

    10. I met Peter at ComicCon in Toronto, and he has been taking my money ever since. I truly recommend this book. It's intelligent, funny and beautifully created.

    11. I picked up this little book on a whim when dropping off some books at a local little free library on my way to the El stop this morning. It had me laughing unabashedly out loud on both legs of my commute. It has been a long time since I have been so amused by a comic/graphic novel. I plan on looking up more of this author/artist's work.

    12. Read my full review at wadingthroughbooks.wordpress!Have you ever had a bad idea? How about an entire book filled with bad ideas? It’s quite a challenge, but Rock, Paper, Cynic artist Peter Chiykowski is up to it, with a little help from some friends (ok, 40+ guest artists, I’ll assume they’re friends if they appeared in his book. That’s safe, right? I mean, if you’re making a book, do you ask your mortal enemies to draw in it? Is that a thing? That doesn’t seem like a thing. I mean, [...]

    13. I got this book in the mail just as I was heading to work and so I opened the package when I arrived. This book had me laughing out loud before I was even past the forward and before the night was through, the author's fanbase had grown to include the entire staff. Wonderful, beautiful book full of creative and original content. I am proud beyond words of what Peter has accomplished within these covers. Please please please pick up this book of you are even tempted by this review. This is my fav [...]

    14. Peter has top-notch art and a great sense of humour that combine into a cute (sometimes deceptively cute) one-shot comic collection. Recommended.

    15. Read the HMS Bad Idea was a rush of energy and delight. For context, it contained about 0.4% of the virtuosity of R. Kelly's opening number in Space Jam
