As with many or most late-era 2e books, the problem here is not so much that the book is bad, or even unnecessary, as it is that the attempt to waste time and pad out the pages is so very transparent. Time and again the beholder eye-powers are repeated in full, unvaryingly, for every beholder NPC. Time and again we read a small variation on the sentence "Fighting an XX is similar to combating a standard beholder." First-level MU spell that prevents beholder skin from hardening after death?
