    1. Underwood does an excellent job of presenting the history of a Mexican soldier accused of murdering a young girl and the transformation after his death by a firing squad into a martyr worshipped by thousands who believed he could perform miracles from the other side of the grave. A bit academic at times, overly footnoted, it nevertheless is a good read and a good translation has been issued in Spanish.
